With Vista breached, Linux remains unbeaten in hacking contest

After Mac was hacked in 2 minutes at the CanSecWest Conference, it was now the time for Vista to get hacked on the 3rd day. Vista's security was compromised through the popular 3rd party software, Adobe Flash.

"The contest, which saw a MacBook Air get hacked on Thursday, relaxed the rules even further. On the first day of the contest, only the operating system could be targeted, but on the second day that was expanded to include standard applications. An undisclosed Safari flaw led to the MacBook Air's downfall through the OS X operating system."

The MacBook Air went first; a Fujitsu laptop running Vista was hacked on the last day of the contest; but it was Linux, running on a Sony Vaio, that remained undefeated as conference organizers ended a three-way computer hacking challenge Friday at the CanSecWest conference.

Capcom acquires Tenchu developer K2

The deal will be completed via an exchange of stock with K2 shareholders receiving 3,362 shares of Capcom stock for each share of K2 stock, totalling 201,720 Capcom shares.

"K2 has a proven record as a reliable provider of game development services for Capcom. By making this company a wholly owned subsidiary, Capcom plans to make its game development activities more efficient and speedy," said the company in a statement.

"Capcom also believes that pursuing a business strategy based on closer ties with K2 will help increase the value of the entire Capcom Group," added the publisher.

The deal is expected to complete on May 1, 2008.

Direct Folders

AppCleaner

Windows only: Freeware application Direct Folders jumps quickly to any folder on your filesystem (and then some) for quick navigation through regular Explorer windows or save dialogs. After installing Direct Folders, double-click any free space on an Explorer window to bring up the Direct Folder menu. From there you can choose one of your favorite folders (or even apps), add new favorites, or access recent folders. With a lot more time-saving functionality worth using (like automatic folder resizing), Direct Folders seems almost magical. Direct Folders is freeware, Windows only (a pro version is available for a price, but most of the marquee features are available to the freeware version).

AppCleaner

AppCleaner

Mac OS X only: Freeware application AppCleaner completely uninstalls applications from your Mac. As most of us know, the process of "uninstalling" applications on the Mac is generally as simple as trashing the application, but many programs leave behind settings and other small files that continue to take up space on your hard drive. AppCleaner identifies these files and takes them down with the application they belong to. To use it, you can either drag and drop the app you want to uninstall onto AppCleaner or click the tabs to select what you want to uninstall from the list of apps, widgets, or plug-ins AppCleaner finds. AppCleaner is freeware, Mac OS X only.

Windows Search 4.0 Preview

Windows Search 4.0 Preview

Windows only: Microsoft has released a new version of their Windows Search tool out into the wild—an update to the desktop search tool that comes baked into Vista. Aside from promises of having squashed most reported bugs from the original and improving search times by about 33%, the Windows Search 4.0 Preview also includes support for XP. That's right, XP users, one of the best things that Microsoft did when they made Vista is now available for your XP desktop as well. Of course, if you haven't already found a competent desktop search app on XP (like Google Desktop, for example) while Microsoft has been taking its sweet time, chances are you may not really need one to begin with. On the other hand, if the promises of the 4.0 Preview sound worth a shot, head over to Microsoft and grab the free download.
